In NY for some reason I almost never go to see new wide-release movies. I've seen four on this trip:
Black Swan
Tiny Furniture
The King's Speech
Social Network
My mom and I went to see the latter two today: two movies in one day!
These movies seemed an awful lot like TV.
I liked Black Swan the best out of the lot. It's about how insane it is to devote oneself to art; it rouses all kinds of ridiculous cliches about artmaking and I very much enjoyed that. Also one character in it, the rival, reminded me a great deal of Adeena.
Is it just too pedestrian of me to say how much I enjoy Tchaikovsky? And that I often obsessively hum from Swan Lake & The Nutcracker as I am going about my life? I especially like the Waltz of the Sugar Plum Fairy... so lovely to do housework to.
This reminds me of a dream I had the other night: I was having a party, and lots of friends were there. I remember specifically Edwin and Sharon being there. I had told everyone that I would have lots to eat at the party and that there would be dancing. Unfortunately there was no food in the cupboards and I tried to call out for some pizzas, but I realized I didn't know my own address and it wasn't in my cell phone. Then I tried to put on some dance music, but Gary had taken most of the music and all I had left were a few assorted cassette tapes and a full set of Jerry Lewis DVDs.
What's the connection? It's time to RESTOCK my music collection with stuff //I// like, but I'm not so sure what that is anymore. I felt so overwhelmed by his thousands of CDs, upon many of whose spines were inscribed lettering systems I could not decipher, that I rarely picked out anything to play. So I need to start investigating & acquiring again as part of my re-bildung. What will I like? It's kind of an exciting question.
